Rockstar has apparently built a comparable reputation mechanic into GTA 6, referred to internally as the "Criminal Profile." Details have surfaced gradually through preview coverage from outlets that attended recent hands-off sessions with the game, including footage from TGG and reporting from IGN, and a clearer picture is starting to form of how the system actually functions.

How the Criminal Profile Works

At its core, the system tracks how ruthless or restrained a player chooses to be. Racking up needless kills or excessive violence drags the Criminal Profile down, and that shift doesn't go unnoticed — NPCs are expected to react differently to a player who's built a reputation as trigger-happy, potentially recognizing them from GTA 6's in-game social media as a known troublemaker and steering clear.

Despite the depth of the system, Rockstar isn't forcing players to engage with it. Nelson reportedly confirmed that the Criminal Profile can simply be ignored altogether — players who want to cause chaos without worrying about long-term reputation consequences are free to do so, and the game won't break as a result.

That optional framing echoes how GTA 6's romance system has been described elsewhere: present for players who want it, but never mandatory. It fits a broader pattern in GTA 6's design philosophy, where several deeper systems appear to be opt-in rather than forced, leaving it up to the player whether they want the added realism or just want to cause chaos without consequence.
