For two decades, jacking a car in Grand Theft Auto has meant the same thing: walk up, press a button, watch your protagonist yank the driver out, and drive off. It didn't matter if it was a rusted-out sedan or a six-figure supercar — the process was identical. That's finally changing. Speaking to IGN as part of the game's Netflix reveal showcase, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson confirmed that GTA 6 is scrapping the one-button hotwire in favor of a full vehicle security system, one that treats different cars very differently depending on how well-protected they are. "We have put some layers of stratification into the vehicles," Nelson said. "Previously, you could just press triangle to automatically hotwire and steal any vehicle that you wanted and take off. We felt like that left a lot of potential gameplay on the table in terms of progression and decision-making for players." Old Cars Are Easy. Nice Cars Are a Job.The system works on a tier basis. Beat-up junkers will still be pretty much instant grabs — nobody's protecting a car that even Simon Yetarian wouldn't look twice at. But move up to something with real value, and the process gets a lot more involved. Certain higher-end vehicles are gated behind story progress entirely, meaning Jason and Lucia will need to unlock the tools required to crack them before they're even an option. Two of those tools are confirmed so far: a key cloner, for cars running electronic immobilizers, and a classic Slim Jim, for simpler mechanical locks. Expect more to surface as additional previews and gameplay roll out. Meet Waink: Your Pre-Theft Scouting App Before you even touch a door handle, GTA 6 wants you to check first. A new phone app — Waink — lets players scan a parked car from a distance to pull up its security profile: whether it's locked, what kind of alarm it's running, whether it has a tracker installed, what it's worth if sold, and what it would cost to register the car under your own name instead. It's a small addition, but it reframes car theft as a decision rather than a reflex — do you want this car badly enough to go get the right tool for it, or is it not worth the trouble? GPS Trackers Turn Getaways Into a Real EscapeGrabbing the car isn't necessarily the end of it, either. Some higher-value vehicles come fitted with GPS trackers, and speeding while driving one will trigger a law enforcement alert. It's a built-in tension mechanic: stolen cars aren't automatically "safe" the second you're behind the wheel — driving carefully becomes part of the theft itself, not just the escape. Keep It or Flip ItOnce a car's actually in your hands, GTA 6 gives you options beyond immediately trashing it in a mission. Stolen vehicles can be sold off, or registered and kept as a personal ride. Both Jason and Lucia will be able to hold onto multiple personal vehicles, provided they've got the garage space to store them — turning car collecting into an actual system rather than a side effect of driving around. Why It MattersIt's a notable philosophical shift for a franchise whose entire name is built around grand theft auto, and yet has treated the "theft" part as a formality since 2001. Nelson framed the goal as giving vehicles "more meaning" and forcing players to actually pay attention to what they're doing — rather than cars being interchangeable, disposable objects. How many security tiers exist in total, and how deep the tool progression goes, is still unknown. But paired with everything else revealed in this week's Extended Look — the map scale, the character-switching co-op system, the honor mechanics — it's another sign Rockstar is trying to make Leonida feel less like a sandbox of props and more like a world with actual friction in it. Now, in the hours following the "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" trailer premiere on Netflix, we finally have some hard numbers to put behind that claim — straight from one of the people building the game. The numbers, from the sourceDuring a post-trailer livestream, YouTuber TGG — one of a small group of creators flown out to Rockstar North for an early hands-off look at GTA 6 — relayed details from a conversation with Rob Nelson, Head of Development and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North. Asked directly about the size of the map, Nelson reportedly told TGG that Leonida's overall landmass comes in at roughly double the size of GTA V's map, and about three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's map. Nelson also broke the comparison down further. Vice City itself, on its own, is said to be twice the size of Los Santos. Factor in the surrounding metro area and suburbs around Vice City, and that figure balloons to roughly eleven times the size of Los Santos and its own surrounding sprawl. For a series that built its reputation on Los Santos feeling like a living, breathing recreation of Los Angeles, that's a staggering jump — and it suggests Rockstar sees Vice City less as "one city on a bigger map" and more as the anchor of an entire region built to be explored for years. Why this checks outThis isn't the first time this scale of number has surfaced. Independent fan measurements pulled from recent Cyberleek gameplay leaks put Leonida's explorable landmass at somewhere around 83 square kilometers — which lines up with estimates of it being close to twice the size of GTA V and more than double Red Dead Redemption 2, even before accounting for water and unexplorable terrain. Community mapping projects going back to 2024 had already speculated Leonida could land somewhere in the 2.5x-GTA V range based on leaked geography, so Nelson's on-record figures are less a surprise reveal and more an official confirmation of what dedicated fans had already pieced together. What makes Nelson's comments notable is the source. This isn't a datamine or a forum measurement — it's Rockstar North's own Head of Development putting a number on the record, even if secondhand through TGG's livestream. The scale isn't just about sizeRockstar has been careful throughout GTA 6's rollout to frame the map's size as a byproduct of detail, not just raw acreage. That messaging lines up with recent comments from the studio about its design philosophy — down to deciding who's sitting where in a bar, what they're drinking, and the wear left behind on a table.
