Rockstar Paying Nearly $1 Million for GTA 6 "Vice City" Signage in Miami

Rockstar Games' marketing push for GTA 6 has spilled into the real world in a big way — and it's come with a bill attached. According to a new report from The Miami Herald, Rockstar has agreed to pay Miami-Dade County close to $1 million for the right to slap a "Welcome to Vice City" sign atop the Kaseya Center, the county-owned arena where the NBA's Miami Heat play.

The sign is already going up, and it's tied directly to the game's fiction: in GTA 6 and GTA Online, the Kaseya Center is reimagined as the Sahara Arena, home court of the fictional Vice City Narcos. Sahara, for anyone who's spent time in Los Santos, is Rockstar's long-running in-game stand-in for Amazon.

But the money itself has turned into a local political football. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, a Democrat, wants Rockstar's payment funneled into the planned Parcel B park behind the arena. Republican Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez has a very different idea: he wants the cash redirected to the Sheriff's Office instead, arguing that GTA 6 promotes "violence against police and crime-heavy narratives."

Bermudez went further at a recent county meeting, telling attendees he's worried that players "may choose to commit crimes" after playing the game and that it could "impact the county's reputation." It's a familiar refrain — video games catching blame for real-world crime while the actual causes go unexamined — but it's notable that it's now playing out over an actual line item in a county budget.

Per Local10 News, Rockstar and Miami-Dade are reportedly in ongoing talks about installing more signage around the area, with additional details expected at the county's next commission meeting.

The Vice City sign isn't the only real-world marketing tied to GTA 6 popping up in major cities right now — Spotify recently put up its own billboards in Miami, Los Angeles, and New York to promote the game as well.

GTA 6 is set to release November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
