PlayStation to End Physical Disc Production in 2028, Following GTA 6's Digital-Only Launch

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation will stop making physical game discs altogether, closing out an era that has defined console gaming for three decades.

The Announcement

The news came via a PlayStation Blog post, where the company said physical disc production for new PlayStation games will be discontinued starting in January 2028. After that date, new titles will only be available digitally — through the PlayStation Store or as download codes sold at retail. Sony framed the move as a response to shifting habits, noting that consumer demand for digital media has now far outpaced demand for discs, making the change a natural evolution rather than a sudden pivot.

Games released before the January 2028 cutoff won't be affected, meaning existing catalog titles will continue to be printed in the meantime.

The GTA 6 Connection

The timing is impossible to ignore. Just about a week before Sony's announcement, Rockstar Games confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI would ship without a disc at all. Physical retail copies will come in a box, but instead of a game disc, buyers will find nothing more than a code to download the game. GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19, 2026.

That decision sparked a wave of backlash from fans and collectors. A petition calling for a real disc release began circulating, some retailers pushed back on stocking a discless "physical" edition, and reports surfaced of shoppers walking out of stores once they learned there was no disc inside the box. Rockstar absorbed the brunt of that criticism — but Sony's announcement suggests the industry was already heading in this direction, and GTA 6 simply got there first.

Notably, GTA 6's November 2026 release date falls well before the January 2028 disc cutoff, so Sony's new policy technically doesn't apply to it. Even so, the two stories are now tightly linked in the public conversation, with many treating GTA 6 as the moment that made an all-digital PlayStation future feel inevitable.

What Else Is Changing

Alongside the disc news, Sony also revealed it will begin shutting down the PS3 and PS Vita digital storefronts in August, with a full global shutdown expected by July 2027. That means older digital libraries — including games like GTA V and the original Red Dead Redemption — will no longer be purchasable once the stores close, even though those titles will keep getting printed on disc for current-generation systems in the meantime.

Industry Reaction

Analysts have been quick to point out the business logic behind the decision. Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners argued that ending disc production is a platform-driven choice aimed at cutting manufacturing costs, killing off the used-game resale market, and funneling all revenue directly through the PlayStation Store.

Others see it shaping the next console generation. Ampere Analysis's Piers Harding-Rolls suggested the announcement all but confirms the PS6 won't arrive before 2028, and that its base model likely won't include a disc drive at all — part of Sony's broader push to keep hardware costs down.

The Bigger Picture

For a generation of players who grew up swapping discs and building physical shelves of games, the announcement marks a symbolic end point — one that mirrors what already happened with music and film. Losing physical media also means losing the ability to resell, lend, or preserve games independently of a publisher's servers, a concern that's fueled much of the fan frustration around both this decision and GTA 6's digital-only release.

Whether framed as an inevitable shift or a cost-cutting move dressed up as consumer preference, one thing is clear: the days of picking up a new PlayStation exclusive with a disc in hand are numbered.
