Rockstar Games has made it easier than ever for longtime players to experience Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online in their enhanced next-gen glory. As of June 18, 2026, eligible owners of the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions can upgrade for free to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S editions.

This upgrade brings improved visuals, faster loading times, increased frame rates, and access to all the latest GTA Online content and exclusive next-gen features that have been added over the years.

Who Qualifies for the Free Upgrade?

  • PlayStation: Owners of both physical and digital copies of GTA V on PS4.

  • Xbox: Owners of the digital version on Xbox One (physical disc owners are unfortunately not eligible due to platform limitations).

If you're still playing the last-gen version on a PS5 or Series X|S via backward compatibility, this upgrade will let you switch to the optimized native version.

How to Upgrade on PlayStation 5

  1. Sign in to your PlayStation Network account on your PS5 (create one if needed).

  2. Physical disc owners: Insert your PS4 GTA V disc into the console.

  3. Go to the PlayStation Store and find the PS5 version of GTA V product page.

  4. From the PS4 game hub, select the upgrade offer.

  5. Download the PS5 version (it should be free).

  6. Once downloaded, keep the PS4 disc inserted whenever you want to play the PS5 version.

Tip: The upgrade is tied to your account, so your progress, characters, and purchases in GTA Online will carry over seamlessly.
