With Grand Theft Auto VI set to launch on November 19, 2026, Rockstar Games has now confirmed exactly when players will be able to preload the game on their consoles — and it's earlier than launch day, giving fans a head start.

Anyone who pre-orders GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox Series S|X will be able to begin preloading the game starting November 12, 2026 — a full week before release. That window is designed to let players download the full game ahead of time so it's ready to play the moment the launch-day unlock hits, rather than scrambling with a massive day-one download.

Given the scale of the game, that lead time will likely be necessary. Rockstar hasn't confirmed an exact file size yet, but considering the scope of the world and the precedent set by previous Rockstar titles, players should expect the install size to be substantial — likely well over 100 GB. It's worth clearing out some hard drive space in the weeks leading up to launch.

Physical Copies Also Support Preloading

Notably, Rockstar confirmed that even physical copies of GTA 6 will support this preload window. Rather than shipping the full game on disc, the physical edition will include a download code in the box, which players can redeem starting November 12 to begin preloading just like digital pre-order customers.

This continues a broader industry shift away from disc-based distribution for massive open-world titles. Red Dead Redemption 2's PS4 release, for example, needed two discs just to fit its install size — and with GTA 6 expected to dwarf that in scope, a code-in-box approach makes the digital download the practical standard rather than the exception. Given that digital sales already account for the bulk of game purchases, the move isn't surprising.

Pre-orders for GTA 6 are going live shortly, with digital pre-orders available through both the Xbox Store and the PlayStation Store. The game is launching exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series S|X, with PlayStation confirming that the PS5 Pro version will receive specific enhancements to take advantage of its more powerful hardware.
