Grand Theft Auto VI had a massive effect on Netflix last night, and the early data proves just how big Rockstar's grand unveiling really was.
The Grand Theft Auto VI: Extended Look premiered on Netflix on Thursday, August 27, giving subscribers a six-hour head start on the rest of the internet before the footage hit YouTube and the official GTA VI site. The impact was immediate — when fans flocked to the platform to watch, the stream struggled to play and briefly crashed for viewers before smoothing out roughly a minute later.
Now the numbers are in, and they show exactly how big that moment was for Netflix.
The Numbers, According to Sensor Tower
A report from GamesBeat, citing data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, shows the Extended Look triggered a huge surge in Netflix viewership. User counts jumped 35% during the hour the presentation began compared to the hour before it — and that's a 50% increase over the same time slot the previous day.
The platform strain wasn't evenly spread. Mobile usage on Netflix was particularly strong during the premiere, while web traffic saw an even bigger spike: desktop and browser users rose by a staggering 125% compared to Netflix's average Thursday traffic over the prior 12 weeks. That surge is reportedly what caused the brief crash fans experienced as the video went live.
Sensor Tower senior insights analyst Abe Yousef framed the numbers as proof of concept for Netflix's broader strategy of using major entertainment tie-ins to widen its appeal beyond traditional film and TV.

YouTube Numbers Are Climbing Fast Too
The Netflix exclusivity window didn't last long. Once the Extended Look hit Rockstar's official YouTube channel several hours later, it quickly racked up more than 5 million views, and that number has kept climbing since. On Netflix itself, the 26-minute showcase reportedly shot to the top of the platform's daily Top 10, listed as a film rather than a TV special.
Preorders Are Already Piling Up
Netflix viewership wasn't the only figure Sensor Tower tracked. The firm also estimates that GTA VI has already been preordered around 4.6 million times, even without a firm November release date locked to a specific day. Of those preorders, the platform split currently favors PS5, with the console reportedly accounting for the majority share over Xbox.
Alongside the gameplay footage, Rockstar also released more than 20 new screenshots to accompany the showcase, giving fans plenty to pore over ahead of the game's next marketing beat.
