For any Grand Theft Auto title, the map is not just a setting; it's the main character. With Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar Games is poised to deliver its "biggest and most immersive" world to date. Based on official trailers, screenshots, and extensive analysis, we have a clear picture of what this new sandbox will entail.

The game is set in the modern-day State of Leonida, Rockstar's satirical take on Florida. This new setting marks a return to the beloved, neon-soaked streets of Vice City (a fictional Miami), but expands far beyond its urban borders to encompass the entire state, creating a world estimated to be nearly twice the size of GTA V's Los Santos and Blaine County.

This new map belongs to the "HD Universe," meaning it is a complete, modern reimagining and not a direct recreation of the 3D Universe map from 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

The State of Leonida: Confirmed Regions & Counties

The map of Leonida is a diverse land of vibrant cities, murky wetlands, and tropical islands. Official information has highlighted several key regions and counties, each with its own distinct feel.

Vice-Dale County (Southeast)

This is the heart of Leonida, based on Miami-Dade County. It's the home of the game's central metropolis, Vice City.

  • Vice City: The glamourous, chaotic, and sun-drenched capital of "sun and fun." This sprawling city is divided into many iconic neighborhoods, including:

    • Vice Beach / Ocean Beach: Home to pastel art deco hotels and bright white sands, as seen in the bustling beach scenes from the first trailer.

    • Little Haiti & Little Havana: Vibrant, culturally rich neighborhoods.

    • Stockyard (Wynwood): Likely an arts and industrial district.

    • Venetian Islands, Washington Beach, and Leaf Links are also confirmed to return.

  • Key Landmarks: The county also features the Vice City International Airport, the Port of Vice City (a major cruise ship hub), and a functional Vice City Metro system, which players can reportedly enter and ride.

Kelly County (Northwest)

Described as "Leonida's forgotten coast," this region, likely based on the Florida Panhandle, presents a stark contrast to the glamour of Vice City.

  • Port Gellhorn: This is a key location in Kelly County, a rural town fueled by "malt liquor, painkillers, and truck stop energy drinks." It represents the gritty, "Florida Man" side of the state, with cheap motels, shut-down attractions, and a new economy driven by desperation. The presence of its own police department suggests a significant, distinct area.

Grassrivers (South)

This is Leonida's "untamable jewel," a massive wetland wilderness directly inspired by the Florida Everglades.

  • This primordial expanse is full of mangroves, wildlife, and danger. The trailers have shown this area teeming with life, from alligators (a major feature) to various birds. It's described as a place where "you never know what lies beneath the surface."

Leonida Keys (South)

Inspired by the real-world Florida Keys, this tropical archipelago is a "gateway to paradise."

  • Life here is more casual, with a heavy focus on bars, boats, and coastal life. This region connects the mainland to a chain of islands, showcasing some of the most beautiful—and dangerous—waters in the game.

Other Confirmed Counties

Road signs and official art have confirmed several other counties, painting a picture of a massive, interconnected state:

  • Leonard County (East): Based on Broward County, this area includes locations like Waning Sands.

  • Ambrosia County (Northeast): A more inland, rural area home to the Allied Crystal sugar refinery, likely the industrial and agricultural heart of Leonida.

  • Mariana County (Southwest): Another confirmed county, likely featuring coastal and rural towns.

Map Size and Leaked Renditions

While the official map has not been revealed, the dedicated GTA Mapping Community has been working tirelessly. By combining in-game coordinates, road signs, and landmarks from the 2022 leaks and the two official trailers, they have created detailed renditions of the potential map layout.

These community-made maps show a massive landmass with Vice City in the southeast, Port Gellhorn in the northwest, and the vast Grassrivers and Leonida Keys to the south. When compared to the GTA V map, these renditions show the GTA VI world to be significantly larger, with some estimates placing it at 1.7 to 2 times the size of its predecessor.

A New Level of Interactivity and Immersion

This new map isn't just bigger; it's denser. GTA VI is rumored to feature over 700 enterable interiors at launch, a massive leap from GTA V. This includes:

  • Nightclubs, strip clubs, and bars

  • Restaurants, supermarkets, and fast-food joints

  • Motels, hotels, and pawn shops

  • Fully functional gun stores and a metro station

The world will be populated by a diverse range of wildlife, including alligators, boars, dogs, snakes, raccoons, flamingos, and even bobcats. The game is also confirmed to feature explorable underwater areas, likely filled with treasure, secrets, and aquatic life.

An Evolving World

One of the most significant reports about the GTA VI map is that Rockstar plans for it to be an evolving world. The initial plan was rumored to be "Project Americas," a map spanning North and South America. This was scaled back for a more focused launch, but Rockstar has reportedly planned to add new missions, cities, and locations to the game over time. This post-launch strategy would make the world of GTA VI dynamic, regularly expanding and offering new areas to explore for years to come.
