Grand Theft Auto VI just delivered one of the biggest marketing moments in gaming history, and Wall Street shrugged.

Rockstar's Extended Look trailer dropped last week, a nearly 30-minute chunk of PS5 gameplay footage that Netflix says became the most-watched English-language film on the platform that week, pulling in a massive spike in traffic the moment it went live. Fan reaction was overwhelmingly positive. Investor reaction was the opposite: Take-Two's share price fell from roughly $235 to $218 when markets opened Monday — an 8% drop — and has slipped further since, putting the stock at its lowest point since pre-orders opened.

A Pre-Order Bump That Wasn't

The main culprit appears to be pre-order data. Analytics firm M Science released a report Monday estimating the Extended Look only generated a few hundred thousand additional global pre-orders in the days after it hit Netflix — on top of an already substantial base of more than 4 million pre-orders logged before the trailer dropped. Investors circulating the report concluded the gameplay reveal simply didn't move the needle the way they'd hoped.

That read skips some context. The vast majority of existing pre-orders are reportedly for the $100 Ultimate Edition, and historically, the bulk of any game's pre-order volume lands in the final week before release rather than months out. Comparisons to GTA V's pre-order pace also miss an obvious wrinkle: that game leaned heavily on physical retail in a market that looked nothing like today's.

A Speculative Op-Ed Gets Treated Like a Report

Panic also spread after a Forbes opinion piece speculated — without sourcing — that GTA Online's presence in GTA 6 could be spun off as a standalone release down the line, rather than launching alongside the game. It was framed as pure conjecture, not reporting, and drew pushback from investors on social media who called out the overreaction. Still, some shareholders treated the speculation as gospel. Even if Rockstar eventually did carve out a separate GTA Online follow-up, there's no evidence pointing that way yet — and given how central GTA Online monetization is to Take-Two's business model, any wobble in confidence there tends to ripple into the stock quickly.

Leak Fatigue Adds to the Jitters

Ongoing gameplay leaks tied to a source with apparent access to the full build have also unsettled some investors, who've floated fears that the leaks could force a delay. Since the Extended Look premiered, though, interest in the leaks has largely died down, and Rockstar remains on track for its planned release.

The Bigger Picture

Taken together, the sell-off looks less like a verdict on GTA 6's prospects and more like a case of investors misreading incomplete data and running with worst-case speculation. Barring something going seriously wrong with the game itself, GTA VI remains on track to be a massive commercial success when it launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19.
