Grand Theft Auto VI's Extended Look didn't just dominate Netflix's charts — it's now moving hardware off store shelves.
The 27-minute gameplay deep dive premiered on Netflix last week and became the platform's most-watched program worldwide, with more than 31 million viewers tuning in. That kind of reach was always going to ripple outward, and new retail data suggests it already has.
According to Nielsen IQ figures reported by The Game Business, UK PS5 sales rose 33% in the week following the reveal, while Xbox Series X|S sales climbed 34%. PS5 Pro units are now sold out across most UK retailers, with Sony's own site the only reliable place to find one in stock.
The console bump lines up with what's happening on the pre-order side. Sensor Tower data shows GTA 6 pre-orders jumped 572% over the two days following the Netflix premiere, with PlayStation buyers driving the overwhelming majority of that surge — PS5 pre-orders alone spiked 606% on the day of the reveal, compared to a more modest 127% increase for Xbox. That gap tracks with a pattern Sensor Tower has tracked since June: PS5 has led Xbox in GTA 6 reservations since pre-orders opened, likely reflecting Sony's broader marketing push around the game.
Not everyone is convinced the console boost will have staying power. Newzoo's Ronan Patrick told The Game Business that any hardware uptick "may not be as significant as hoped," pointing out that today's PS5 pricing is roughly 67% higher in inflation-adjusted terms than at launch, with Xbox pricing roughly double. Patrick suggested the more likely outcome is a reallocation of spend toward software rather than a lasting jump in new console adoptions — comparing it to the 2020–2021 GPU shortage, where hardware scarcity didn't meaningfully dent engagement or revenue.
Still, for an industry that's seen UK console hardware sales fall 14.4% year-over-year (driven largely by a 32% drop in PS5 sales), even a short-term bump is notable. Nintendo Switch 2 also saw sales rise roughly a third in the same window, just ahead of a price increase on the console.
Rockstar has not commented on hardware sales directly, and neither Sony nor Microsoft has released official figures tied to the reveal. With Grand Theft Auto VI set to launch November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the real test of whether this translates into sustained console demand will likely play out over the next several weeks.
