GTA 6's Extended Look Sends Decades-Old Songs Rocketing Up Spotify — One Track Up 130,000%

Rockstar Games' Extended Look at Grand Theft Auto VI didn't just break viewership records — it's now reshaping listening habits on streaming platforms weeks after it aired. New data from Spotify, Billboard and Shazam shows several songs featured in the 26-minute PS5 gameplay reveal experiencing enormous, near-instant surges in plays and playlist adds, the latest sign of just how far the trailer's cultural reach has extended beyond gaming circles.

Spotify: a 130,000% spike

Spotify shared data with EDM.com showing the biggest jump in streams belonged to Captain & Tennille's "But I Think It's A Dream," with global streams climbing roughly 130,730% and playlist additions up around 885,400%. Two other tracks saw major, if less explosive, boosts: Bob Moses and Elderbrook's "Inner Light" grew plays by about 1,070% and playlist adds by around 4,155%, while Depeche Mode's "People Are People" rose roughly 190% in plays and 700% in playlist additions.

It's a familiar pattern for the franchise. GTA 6's very first teaser, back in December 2023, sent Tom Petty's deep cut "Love Is a Long Road" up nearly 37,000% on Spotify, while the second trailer's needle-drop, The Pointer Sisters' "Hot Together," reportedly spiked by 182,000% within just two hours of release. The Extended Look numbers suggest Rockstar's soundtrack choices continue to carry outsized weight with listeners, even against that track record.

Billboard and Luminate: real chart movement

The streaming bump wasn't just a Spotify phenomenon. According to Luminate data reported by Billboard, several songs from the Extended Look saw a real jump in official on-demand U.S. streams during August 28–31 compared with the same period a week earlier — The Bellamy Brothers' "Let Your Love Flow" rose 43% to roughly 422,000 streams, Depeche Mode's "People Are People" climbed 89% to about 221,000 streams, and Cliff Richard's "Devil Woman" jumped 386% to around 321,000 streams.

The two biggest movers by percentage, per Billboard's own reporting, were Chimbala x Omega's "Se Me Nota (Agárrame)" and Elderbrook and Bob Moses' "Inner Light" — the former surged roughly 3,047% to about 464,000 streams, while the latter rose around 462% to roughly 694,000 streams, with both songs also breaking into the top 10 of Shazam's U.S. Top 200 chart and "Inner Light" reaching No. 1 on that list.

The streaming surge adds a music-discovery dimension to a reveal that had already posted staggering numbers on its own — the Extended Look trailer pulled in tens of millions of Netflix views within days of its August 27 debut, alongside massive concurrent viewership across reaction streams. That a single half-hour gameplay showcase can send decades-old songs from Captain & Tennille and Cliff Richard rocketing back up the charts underscores just how much cultural gravity Grand Theft Auto VI is generating months ahead of its November 19 launch — and how central music remains to Rockstar's marketing playbook, a tradition stretching back through every mainline entry in the series.

With the actual game still two and a half months away, it's a safe bet this won't be the last time a GTA VI soundtrack cue sends a song's numbers into overdrive.
