GTA Online Is Free to Play for a Limited Time, No PS Plus or Game Pass Required

Twelve years after its initial launch, Rockstar Games is offering a free trial for Grand Theft Auto Online on current-gen consoles.

For a limited time, players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S can jump into GTA Online without needing an active PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscription. The free trial period was officially confirmed by Rockstar and is set to run from November 11th through November 17th.

The move was first spotted by community members who noticed the subscription requirement to play online had been disabled. A message from Rockstar Games Support, later corroborated by an official announcement, clarified the situation, stating, "At the moment, if you play on console, you will have access to GTA Online as a free trial... You will also have free access to the game on Story mode."

This trial period conveniently resolves a recent point of frustration for players. Last week, Rockstar added GTA Online to its GTA+ subscription service, allowing members to access the game without purchasing it. However, players quickly pointed out that a separate PS Plus or Game Pass subscription was still required to actually play, adding an extra paywall. For this week, GTA+ members can access the game without any other subscription needed.

The timing of the free trial is strategic, coming just a few weeks before the next major GTA Online update, which is rumored to feature mansions. This trial serves as a way to attract new and returning players ahead of the new content drop, potentially boosting game sales and engagement following the recent GTA 6 delay and a reported decrease in GTA Online revenue.
